The Lead Mechanical Designer position requires broad mechanical design skills to customize complex industrial automation systems for customers.  Working independently on assigned projects, this position assists the President with technical reports, proposals and scheduling estimates.  This role requires deep technical skills in mechanical design, strong interpersonal skills in customer service and well-developed project management skills to oversee the quality of work for a small team of mechanical designers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Configure designs to order: Review client requirements and modify existing designs to produce a new custom product(s)
  • Create drawings and submittals for client approval using SolidWorks/AutoCAD
  • Detail manufacturing drawings and BOMs
  • Read/interpret mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and schematics
  • Prepare documentation, instructions, drawings, or specifications to communicate design intent
  • Understand and evaluate cost, performance and reliability of materials, purchased components and associated processes when incorporating them into designs
  • Set up and operate specialized and standard equipment to test, diagnose and analyze the performance of mechanical components, assemblies and systems
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and research new processes and methodologies
  • Research and development for projects and sales
  • Provides technical support to Level 1, 2 and 3 mechanical designers and oversees the quality of their project work
  • Provides support to President in project planning and scheduling, cost estimating and monitoring and quality review
  • Project documentation:  assist with quoting projects, writing specifications, schedules and technical reports
  • Client interfacing to resolve issues quickly and provide on-going dialogue and clear communication
  • Completes project deadlines on time and on budget


Required Skills/Abilities/Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of work experience in industrial automation as a mechanical designer
  • Innovative design skills with Solidworks is required
  • Create 3D models from 2D concepts and drawings
  • Fanuc Robot experience is an asset
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and mechanical aptitude
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree with Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with the PEO is required

Additional Information:

  • Flexible work hours with the occasional “on-call” status is required
  • Travel is required throughout Eastern Ontario and on occasion to other parts of North America including entry into the USA
